Re-entry Espresso (4363 Main Street) is a modern cafe located on 27th and Main with an affordable selection of drinks and pastries and wireless internet access. With booth style seating, large mugs of coffee in the $2 to $3 range and a pot of tea for $2.25, and artwork showcased on the walls, this cafe exudes a laid-back atmosphere for long conversations, catching up with friends or doing some work on your laptop. The only downside are its early closing hours: 6pm every evening.

Modern Mix Monday – COFFEE film on YouTube

On Sunday night, I went to the premier screening of Coffee, a local comedy based on Vancouver coffee culture. With an ensemble cast of 20, Coffee features vignettes of scenarios and conversations over coffee. There are a tons of Vancouver cultural references to look out for: from Spanish Banks to Shoppers Drug Mart. Check out the Coffee YouTube Channel to watch the entire film segmented into bite-sized portions. If you only have 10 minutes to spare, I would recommend watching the hilarious Part 3 with Gina & Toni!

Stay tuned for a full review of the Coffee movie premier event.

As Modern Mix Monday is an honest recollection of my weekend, I will have to admit that I’ve been sick this entire weekend. Modern Mix Monday – Lickerish Restaurant and Lounge

I went to Lickerish Restaurant and Lounge (903 Davie Street) not once, but twice, this past weekend. It’s a small, two-floor restaurant with a tasty selection of contemporary tapas and drinks. When I went on Saturday afternoon, the patio seating was great for people-watching along Davie Street. Beer on tap and highballs were on special for less than $5. I also ordered a small dish of crunchy spring rolls with a creamy mashed potatoes with a red pepper and spinach filling for $8. I would recommend Lickerish as a convenient predrinking location, for an afternoon beer or an evening snack. Regardless, they need to step up on their marketing efforts as they “just ran out” of business cards when I went on Friday night, their website is still under construction…and there were only four people in the entire restaurant when we went on Saturday afternoon. Perhaps this would be a good time to check out Lickerish before it gets too mainstream and busy.

Modern Mix Monday – Jules Bistro

Jules Bistro (216 Abbott Street) is a French bistro located in Gastown and where I went for an afternoon sit-down on Saturday. Nonetheless, I would not recommend going there for tea and coffee as we did – save that for a specialty coffee or teahouse instead. With outdoor seating and the weekend sunshine, the patio was great for people watching while enjoying a reasonably priced light afternoon dish or a $6 dessert. True to its European flair, the restaurant is closed on Sundays. Otherwise, visit between 11:30am to 10pm.

Modern Mix Monday – Canvas Lounge

I love the fabulous layout of Canvas Lounge (99 Powell Street) in Gastown – every time I go, I feel like I’m stepping into an elegant mansion, with railings and staircases and a balcony looking over the dance floor, not a club which I paid $20 to get into on a Saturday night. With “sexy house” on the main dance floor, top 40 and hiphop on the art gallery side and enough seats to be comfortable but not crowded, there’s always something new to explore at Canvas.

Modern Mix Monday – Chill Winston

Dessert and Drinks on Friday night at Chill Winston in Gastown. Got the “Pursuit” cocktail (Absolut pear vodka, apple liqueur, gazela vinho verde, pear and ginger puree and a dash of lemonade) while my friend got fruity sangria. We shared the dessert sampler “The Beast of Both Worlds” with bite sized fruit and choclate desserts. Small and dainty but surprisingly great for sharing because their sweets (fudge, moouse, cheesecake, etc.) are so filling.

Modern Mix Monday – Portobello West

I went to Portobello West (fashion and art market) on Sunday and bought a high-waisted denim skirt from Cici. Coincidently, the person who sold me my skirt was the manager of Life of Riley boutique on Main Street and we recognized each other from various encounters in the local design community in the past. Anyway, back to the skirt: it’s stunningly cute and is an awesome skirt to tuck a shirt into. In general, you can dress down high-waisted skits by wearing a cotton t-shirt or dress it up by wearing a shiny or silky top.
