The concept behind Shop Cocoon (3345 Cambie Street @17th Avenue) is simple. Artists and designers lease shelf space from the store and are also required to work a minimum number of hours behind the counter each week, allowing them the opportunity to showcase their emerging brands without having to undergo the costs of starting up their own shop. The brands available at Shop Cocoon will not be unfamiliar to Vancouverites who are interested in the local and independent designer scene. From Tyte Lids to Filou Designs, these clothing and accessories have frequented the likes of Portobello West, Spend on Trend and more!
On Thursday December 4, from 11am to 9pm, save up to 30% off the entire shop for their friends and family sale. Goodies will be served.

Yesterday evening, I went with my friend Miranda of Style By Fire to Blo Blow Dry Bar‘s Naughty or Nice Block Party in Yaletown in support of the BC Cancer Foundation. When we got there at around 7pm, the patio party was absolutely packed…and for good reason! Event admission was a $5 charity donation, yet its entertainment value exceeded that by far. With great support from local restaurants (including Opus and Cactus Club Cafe) yummy appetizers and drinks were served – from mini burgers to grilled scallops, from mojitos to beer.
On one end of the party, Aziya, a home salon service for girly beautifying sessions, had
Brent Ray Fraser and artwork in action
set up a station with three manicurists to pamper the party guests. On the other end was Brent Ray Fraser putting on an art show. In between was a standing fashion show with local designers. Strangely enough, I ran into a friend from elementary school there and he had an item of clothing from his line Chinamen’s Club up on stage. Stay tuned, I am sure some of the local companies I have mentioned in this entry will appear again in the next few weeks! All in all, it was a very “Yaletown” event – young urban professionals, stylish guests, and, of course, being patrons of Blo: well-groomed hair.
If you don’t know anything about Taiko, checking out the Mid-Summer Taiko Beat at Centennial Theatre (2300 Lonsdale Avenue) in North Vancouver would be a great place to start learning. Presented by the Vancouver Taiko Society, this concert is a great experience, as it brings together groups from different regions, so you get a taste of different styles of taiko. Some are more traditional, while others are pushing the envelope of what we know to be taiko. While your typical taiko concert in Vancouver will feature mainly Vancouver groups, and 1 or 2 at most, this concert gives you a little taste of everything
Tickets are $25 for adults, $20 for children under 12 and seniors, and are available through the Centennial Theatre box office at 604-984-4484. This concert will feature Japanese drumming groups LOUD (Vancouver), Sawagi Taiko (Vancouver), Kiyoshi Nagata + Aki Takahashi (Toronto), and Inochi Taiko (Seattle). For more information, contact 604-984-7248 or email Kayo at firstname.lastname@example.org.

Click here for 20% and 30% discounted tickets to selected shows of Cirque du Soleil’s Corteo which opened on June 12th in Vancouver.
The Sugarlime Summer Sparkles & Sangrias Jewerly Show is on Wednesday June 11th at the Fairmont Waterfront Hotel (900 Canada Place Way, 2nd Floor Princess Louisa Suite). This is a FREE event, but by invitation only. However – by reading Modern Mix Vancouver, this is your invitation from me : ). All you need to do is RSVP at email@example.com and it wouldn’t hurt to mention Modern Mix Vancouver in your email too! First 25 people in line will receive 15% off their purchases and all guests arriving before 6pm will be entered to win one of three $50 Sugarlime gift certificates!
I went to one of Sugarlime’s jewelry shows two weeks ago at the Metropolitan Hotel in Downtown Vancouver. It consisted of a hotel showroom with tables set up against the walls and each table had a different color theme of jewelry: turquoise, amethyst and quartz beads on gold or silver jewelry available to purchase. Guests were given trays to put their potential jewelry purchaces on. It was quite busy – not overly crowded, but comfortably busy enough to know that Sugarlime has found a niche in the Vancouver fashion scene. In fact, they are expanding to Toronto this year!
This is taken from the media brief I was sent from Sugarlime:
“Some of Sugarlime’s accomplishments include being voted as one of BC’s most successful businesses on a special CTV News segment, designing jewelry for the Presenters’ Gift Bags for the Emmy, Gemini and Leo Awards, and spotting Sugarlime on Sarah McLachlan on an episode of Oprah.”
Drop by anytime from 5pm to 8pm. Complimentary sangria upon arrival. Don’t forget to RSVP and check out their website: http://www.sugarlime.com.
